1. The ‘5-Minute Decision Rule’:
Commit to making any decision within 5 minutes. No matter how big or small. Force yourself to make a decision within this limited window. If it’s a complex decision, make a mini-decision: What’s the first small step?
HOW? Set a timer for 5 minutes. When it goes off, you must act on your decision. There’s no time to second-guess. This forces action and builds momentum.
WHY IT WORKS: When you have less time, you are forced to focus on the core of the issue. Your brain eliminates the noise and over-complication, focusing on what matters most. You cut through indecision and just do. [1]
2. The ‘JUST 10’ Method:
Set a small, achievable target to work on your task or goal for just 10 minutes. No commitment beyond that. The goal is not finish but start.
HOW? Tell yourself: “I’ll do this for just 10 minutes, and then I can stop if I want.” Once you start (the hardest part is beginning) you’ll often keep going longer without realizing it.
WHY IT WORKS: Starting is the hardest part of any task. By shrinking the time commitment, you remove the mental barrier. Your brain sees the task as less overwhelming, and once you’re in motion, it’s much easier to keep going. [2]
