- This Weeks Hack -

How to say ‘No’
and 2x your productivity.

1. Acknowledge and Defer

"Thanks for thinking of me, but I'm currently focusing on other priorities. Let's touch base later."

2. Pre-emptively Commit

Secure your time for your goals early, making it natural to say you're already booked when new requests come in.

3. Presence Over Words

Sometimes, simply not being available in situations where requests are likely to be made can serve as a passive 'no'.

4. Let silence do the talking

Not every request requires an immediate response. Waiting can help prioritize what truly needs your attention.

5. Provide an alternative

Suggest a later time, another person, or a different resource that could help with the request without overcommitting yourself.

The Science Behind The Hack

Research suggests that saying no can indeed improve productivity and reduce stress. Sullivan (1992) emphasizes the need for reciprocal relationships in the workplace, which can be achieved by setting boundaries and saying no when necessary. Halkos (2010) and Firth (2004) both found that increased stress leads to reduced productivity, while Adaramola (2012) highlights the negative impact of job-related stress on performance. Therefore, by saying no to additional tasks or commitments, individuals can manage their workload and reduce stress, ultimately leading to improved productivity.
